Hydrobiology has been undertaking a number of recent NSW projects. One such project was a recent aquatic ecology survey in Sydney undertaken by Justin and Marie from the Queensland office. Surface water, sediment and biota samples were collected to assess the health of the waterway. A range of sampling techniques were used, including fyke nets, electrofishing, box traps, and dip nets (macroinvertebrates). The chosen method was dependent on the objectives for each studied reach, channel morphology, and habitat characteristics. The photo shows typical deployment of fyke nets during this survey. Fyke netting is a passive technique that allows for the capture of fish alive. Unlike gill nets, most fish can be released alive after being captured in the fyke nets.
