Hydrobiology’s Ecology and Biodiversity Management team have recently completed several receiving environment monitoring program (REMP) surveys across the Fitzroy Basin. There have been strong rainfalls throughout the region over the past two months, and many sites that have often been dry are now flowing. Hydrobiology have critically sampled and assessed aquatic habitat, stream flow, surface water, sediment and biological indicators (diatoms, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates, macrocrustaceans, zooplankton and fish communities) to determine potential impacts related to the releases of mine affected and reverse osmosis (RO) treated waters. These analyses go beyond aquatic ecosystem values and provide a holistic assessment of both ecology and human use environmental values for which local residents and biota rely upon.
