You will also have the opportunity to contribute to major infrastructure and resource projects across Queensland and Australia. These projects often require detailed ecological investigations to support environmental approvals and ensure that development occurs in a way that appropriately considers and protects environmental values, including iconic and threatened species and the ecosystems that support them.
Working alongside experienced scientists, you will assist with field surveys, data analysis and reporting that inform impact assessments, environmental monitoring programs and management strategies. Through this work you will gain practical experience in how scientific evidence is used to guide project design and support conservation outcomes within complex regulatory frameworks. This role provides a strong foundation for developing field, analytical and reporting skills while contributing to projects that influence how aquatic ecosystems are managed alongside major infrastructure development.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
Support in the delivery of a wide range of environmental assessments (e.g. environmental impact assessments) on a range of projects in collaboration with other Hydrobiology specialists, specifically:
- Coordinate the preparation of fieldwork programs (e.g. equipment packing/freighting and organising travel and accommodation).
- Undertake a variety of aquatic ecosystem monitoring programs, including fish, invertebrates, diatoms, and zooplankton sampling, groundwater-dependent ecosystems and aquatic/riparian habitat assessment.
- Undertake and collaborate with senior staff in the preparation of proposals, collation of data and statistical analysis, technical reporting, non-technical documents and coordinating inputs from colleagues.
- Complete tasks on time, to expected quality and at the expected budget to ensure client requirements are met and operations are efficient.
- Opportunities to provide field-based support to other Hydrobiology Teams; such as the Land and Water Management Team (LWM) and Environmental Risk Assessment Team (ERA) and laboratory assistance, as required.
- Coordinate animal ethics and fisheries permit requirements (including data collation and notifying the Fisheries Department prior to fieldwork as appropriate).
- Undertake routine administration duties (including timesheet entry, logging of project-related expenses, attendance of weekly office meetings, etc).
- Commitment to Hydrobiology HSEQ Integrated Management System, including Company policies, procedures and safe work practices.
- Maintain status and contribute to a professional society.
- Undertake other tasks as required by the role.
* Please Note: The list of duties and responsibilities outlined above is representative and not a complete list of tasks.
Essential Skills Required:
- A technical background in Aquatic Ecology (ideally with Honours and/or Master’s qualifications) and demonstrated previous experience in monitoring freshwater ecosystems is highly desirable.
- At least one year of professional experience, either within a research or consulting role.
- Solid grounding in experimental design and ecological statistics.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce high-quality technical reports or publications that are clear and concise yet pitched at a non-expert audience.
- A desire to support other technical staff and others across the company.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Be willing and able to travel for fieldwork, including possible extended-duration trips in rural and remote locations (e.g., SEQ, wider Qld, interstate, and international).
- GIS experience (including Arc platforms and/or other platforms).
- Driver’s License.
Your application would also benefit from demonstrated skills in one or more of the following:
- Developed field skills, particularly in the assessment of fish and macroinvertebrate population and community status, and water quality sampling.
