Hydrobiology’s Land and Water Management Lead, Dr Ben Pearson, provided 1 of 2 Keynote Presentations for the recent International Erosion Control Association – Australasia (IECA) and Stormwater Queensland conference in Noosa. Ben spoke on the ‘Room for the River’ concept, specifically focussing on its interrelationship with geomorphic principles, and using case studies where we could do better! He focused on the importance of rethinking our approach to river and floodplain management that work with (rather than trying to control) river movement and flooding.
It’s a huge paradigm shift that is required particularly among much of the east cost of Australia and fits well within the increasing focus on natural capital investment. Ben represented Hydrobiology, River Basin Management Society, and the #greenandblueby32 alliance.
