Hydrobiology is proud to support Mount Gibson Iron in an innovative coral rehabilitation and habitat enhancement program on Dambimangari Sea Country at Koolan Island, in the heart of the spectacular Buccaneer Archipelago of Western Australia’s Kimberley region.
Our journey began in 2020 with early assessments of coral recovery potential in the region. Since then, we’ve completed feasibility studies, technical investigations, and partnered with local suppliers to trial reef modules designed for this unique tropical environment.
A major milestone was achieved in May this year with the deployment of eight carbon-neutral concrete reef modules, known as bomboras. The word bombora originates from the Dharawal language, meaning waves breaking over a submerged reef, and is the source of the modern surf term bombie.
Designed by Marine Engineers, Ecologists, and Oceanographers, these structures are intended to enhance coral cover, increase habitat complexity, and promote carbon sequestration. Ongoing monitoring will inform the next phase of the program, supporting long-term ecological recovery in this high-energy coastal setting.
Hydrobiology acknowledges the strong environmental leadership of Mount Gibson Iron in driving this innovative project, and thank Matthew Allen for his support and guidance to the project.
