Hydrobiology’s Dr. Frances Alexander was recently invited to deliver a guest lecture at the The University of Queensland on the use of artificial intelligence in the environmental science industry.
Speaking to undergraduate students, Dr Alexander explored how artificial intelligence is already reshaping science and consulting, and what this means for the next generation of professionals. The session emphasised the shift from academic integrity to workplace reality, where AI is no longer something to avoid but a tool to use wisely and ethically. Examples from environmental science showed how AI is being applied to image recognition, data analysis, modelling and report preparation, while also underscoring the risks of relying on it uncritically.
The central message delivered, was that industry now expects awareness, curiosity and responsibility. Graduates who can harness AI as a partner, while demonstrating sound judgment and independent thinking, will be well positioned to thrive in a rapidly evolving professional landscape!
